CITY BRANCH

AUSTRALIAN FEDERATION OF GRADUATE WOMEN - NSW Inc.

Philosphy

Members of City Branch believe in tertiary education for women, lifelong learning, peace, justice and equality for all.

Purpose

Our purpose is to further our own education and skills development through regular meetings and shared ideas; and to promote and encourage the education of women through seminars and scholarships and through active participation in AFGW.

The Branch

The Branch comprises members from various parts of Sydney who meet on the third Thursday of every month in a different location at a different venue in the city. Whilst the majority of meetings are held over lunch, some are held in the early evening to accommodate members still in the workforce.

The lunch time meetings, held in pleasant surroundings, are an opportunity for members to give a short, 10 or 20 minute lecture on their area of speciality or interest.

In addition, members may choose to visit galleries, and attend lectures and concerts.

Although members do not pay a branch subscription, there is an expectation that a donation is given to support the branch scholarship fund.

Most of all the City Branch is a committed group of mature women who believe strongly in the ideal and ethos of the AFGW-NSW movement. The members wish to see AFGW-NSW gather in strength so as to continue its work of encouraging female students of all abilities to make the most of their chances.

An open invitation is extended to all members and visitors to join us at any of our lunch or evening meetings.

Awards

In line with our philosophy to encourage the pursuit of higher education of female students, scholarships are awarded to TAFE students undergoing the Tertiary Preparation Certificate. This course provides opportunity to those who have not followed the Higher School Certificate pathway to gain entry to university.

The colleges whose students receive the awards are chosen by the members. The recipients of the awards are at the discretion of the lecturers.

As well as pointing out that the AFGW offer other scholarships we hope to imbue the student with the idea that when they have obtained their degree they too will be in a position to "pay back" all the help they have received by encouraging other students in some form or another, hopefully as a member of the AFGW.
